Two new Marriott hotels and a new Chris Hastings restaurant are in the works in a $45 million project at the downtown site once dubbed “the heaviest corner on earth.”

As we reported back in November, the 16-story Empire building at 1928 First Ave. N., will be converted into a 117-room Autograph Collection by Marriott hotel in a project led by Georgia’s Ascent Hospitality.

Yingling plans for new hangar on Eisenhower Airport campus

Wichita aviation services company Yingling Aviation is seeking a new land-lease agreement with the Wichita Airport Authority as part of plans to build a 16,000-square-foot hangar with office space.

According to the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting of the Wichita City Council, Yingling will seek to lease 170,000 square feet of land at 1780 Airport Rd. on the campus of Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport where it will build the new hangar.

Melk Music expanding, moving away from Zoo Interchange rebuild to new store

The Melk Music instrument store is moving out of its location south of Interstate 94 and is moving to a new location in Muskego.

The move is partially prompted by the ongoing reconstruction of I-94, but eventually would have been necessary regardless because the store needs more space, said owner Fred Melk. Melk Music sells band and orchestra instruments, sheet music and other equipment.

Hollywood Casino hotel on hold; operator faces big penalty

The operator of Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway is folding plans to start work on a new hotel next to the casino this month, and they’ll have to ante up an estimated $1.25 million a year until they decide go forward with the project.

The operator, Kansas Entertainment LLC, a 50/50 joint venture of Penn Hollywood Kansas Inc. and Kansas Speedway Development Corp., notified the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan., of the decision to postpone the 248-room hotel.
